The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is mourning the sudden passing of assistant coach and former player, Morton Johnston. The 25-year-old died in a motor vehicle crash on Sunday, hours before the Princeton Posse team was due to play a conference-championship clinching game against Revelstoke.
In his honour, and with the support of his family, the team decided to play the game and earned the Okanagan-Shuswap Conference Finals title. They will now face off against Kimberley for the Teck Cup.
The KIJHL issued a statement on Monday praising Johnston’s tenacity and energy as a player and his beloved status among teammates. They extended their deepest sympathies to his family, Posse organization and community of Princeton.
