Viral Video Shows B.C. Bear Making Itself at Home on Family Deck in Cowichan

In a surprising turn of events, a black bear in the Cowichan region of British Columbia has been caught on video taking up residence under the Weaver family’s deck. The video, which was shared on TikTok by Crystal Weaver, has already gained over 4 million views.

Crystal Weaver and her husband live along the Cowichan River, a well-known wildlife thoroughfare. However, they were taken aback when they discovered a bear sleeping under their porch. The encounter was captured on video and quickly went viral.

It turns out their two-year-old dog, Coco, had been behaving unusually for weeks leading up to the discovery. Coco had been barking incessantly, but the Weavers simply assumed she was being “an idiot.” Little did they know that Coco was trying to warn them about the bear under their deck.

One night, while watching a movie, the Weavers heard strange noises coming from outside their bedroom. Each time they investigated, the noise would stop. Eventually, they suspected it was a raccoon family. However, the next morning, when Crystal’s husband went to check, he came face-to-face with a black bear.

Terrified, Crystal’s husband attempted to scare the bear away by jumping on the deck. But the bear remained unfazed. It was at this point that they decided to call the RAPP line for assistance.

The viral video serves as a reminder to pay attention to our pets’ behavior as they may be trying to communicate important information to us. The Weavers are now taking steps to bear-proof their deck and ensure the safety of their family and pets.

This incident highlights the importance of coexisting with wildlife in the Okanagan and Similkameen area, where encounters with bears and other animals are not uncommon. As residents, it is crucial to be aware of our surroundings and take necessary precautions to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
