Penticton council is not happy with the B.C. government’s drug decriminalization program. They believe it’s a ‘failed experiment’ and are speaking out about it.

City councillors voted 6-1 to send a letter to the province asking them to stop the pilot project. They want the focus to be on building programs and services for recovery and treatment for those struggling with addiction in both small and large communities.

The province’s drug decriminalization program started in January 2023 and is supposed to last until 2026. However, B.C. Premier David Eby recently asked Health Canada to change the rules and make using hard drugs in public illegal again.

Coun. Amelia Boultbee thinks decriminalization was a mistake. She says that instead of saving lives by removing the stigma around drugs, it has actually made the situation worse. Preliminary numbers show that 2023 was the deadliest year on record for drug overdoses in B.C., with over 2,500 lives lost.

In Penticton, 22 fatal overdoses were recorded in 2023, which is down from the previous year. But Coun. Isaac Gilbert believes that people will still use drugs whether they are decriminalized or not. He thinks the province should have provided more services to help those in need when they made the change.
